One of the symbols of Sapporo, the river that runs through the center of the city.
Sapporo's urban area spreads out across the alluvial fan formed by the Toyohira River.
During the Edo period, this was a salmon fishing ground, and in autumn salmon swim upstream on the Toyohira River, which flows through the center of this city of two million people.
Salmon disappeared in the 1950s and 1960s due to a deterioration in water quality, but the water quality improved in the 1970s and a citizens' movement called "Come Back Salmon" led to the salmon's return in 1981.
