The history of the botanical garden began in 1877 (Meiji 10), when W.S. Clark, who was vice principal of Sapporo Agricultural College, advised the Hokkaido Development Agency that a botanical garden was necessary for botany education.
The land for the botanical garden (current location) was transferred to Sapporo Agricultural College along with the museum, and Miyabe Kingo, who would later become the first director of the garden, planned and designed it, and it opened in 1886 (Meiji 19). It was the first modern botanical garden built in Japan, and is the second oldest in the country.
Within the 13.3 hectare park, giant Japanese elm trees and parts of dense forest remain, giving a glimpse of the old Sapporo before the Meiji period.
In 1989, the main museum building and other buildings were registered as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
