It has been about a century since it was built in 1923 as the Hokkaido Government Library in commemoration of Yukihiro. The building, which was familiar to the people of Sapporo as both a library and an art museum, was reborn in March 2016 as the Kitakaro Sapporo Main Building, designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando.
Enjoy lunch and sweets at the cafe on the second floor, which has an open atrium.
Continuing its history as a former library, approximately 6,000 books are lined up on bookshelves that reach the ceiling on both the east and west walls, and cafe users can read them freely.
In the ``Memorial Room'' at the back of the cafe, photos and documents about the history of the building are displayed.
