Hokkaido Shrine (Sapporo Shrine) was built in Maruyama in 1872. However, at that time, transportation facilities were not well developed and it was difficult to go to the foot of Maruyama to worship in the winter, so Tongu was established in 1878 as a place of worship.
It has become a lively hub for local residents, holding marches and other events.
